Pregnant women are referred for antenatal care once pregnancy has been confirmed. The mother is given a full initial assessment and counseling when she comes for her first antenatal visit, also known as the booking visit. This usually takes place around 12 weeks gestation. The pregnancy is monitored through regular follow-up visits. The mother’s health is also closely monitored. She will be weighed, her blood pressure taken and urine tested. If there are no complications, she will return for her first follow-up visit after two weeks, for the results of the tests taken during the booking visit. After this she must return to the clinic every three weeks up to 28 weeks, then every 2 weeks up to 36 weeks.

We understand a woman’s behavior in pregnancy affects her baby, that is why we provide antenatal classes, check ups and consultations to ensure both the mother and her baby are healthy during pregnancy. The aim of good prenatal care is to detect any potential problems early, to prevent them if possible (through recommendations on adequate nutrition, exercise, vitamin intake etc.).
